21 Mad or not?是不是瘋了
Aeroplanes are slowly driving me mad. I live near an airport and passing planes can be heard night and day. The airport was built years ago, but for some reason it could not be used then. Last year, however, it came into use. Over a hundred people must have been driven away from their homes by the noise. I am one of the few people left. Sometimes I think this house will be knocked down by a passing plane. I have been offered a large sum of money to go away, but I am determined to stay here. Everybody says I must be mad and they are probably right.

My daughter, Jane, never dreamed of receiving a letter from a girl of her own age in Holland. Last year, we were travelling across the Channel and Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it into a bottle. She threw the bottle into the sea. She never thought of it again, but ten months later, she received a letter from a girl in Holland. Both girls write to each other regularly now. However, they have decided to use the post office. Letters will cost a little more, but they will certainly travel faster.

I had a letter from my sister yesterday. She lives in Nigeria. In her letter, she said that she would come to England next year. If she comes, she will get a surprise. We are now living in a beautiful new house in the country. Work on it had begun before my sister left. The house was completed five months ago. In my letter, I told her that she could stay with us. The house has many large rooms and there is a lovely garden. It is a very modern house, so it looks strange to some people. It must be the only modern house in the district.

I entered the hotel managers office and sat down. I had just lost $50 and I felt very upset. I left the money in my room, I said, and its not there now. The manager was sympathetic, but he could do nothing. Everyones losing money these days, he said. He started to complain about this wicked world but was interrupted by a knock at the door. A girl came in and put an envelope on his desk. It contained $50. I found this outside this gentlemans room, she said. Well, I said to the manager, there is still some honesty in this world!

I arrived in London at last. The railway station was big, black and dark. I did not know the way to my hotel, so I asked a porter. I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well. The porter, however, could not understand me. I repeated my question several times and at last he understood. he answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly. I am a foreigner, I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that! The porter and I looked at each other and smiled. Then he said something and I understood it. Youll soon learn English! he said. I wonder. In England, each person speaks a different language. The English understand each other, but I dont understand them! Do they speak English?

I am an art student and I paint a lot of pictures. Many people pretend that they understand modern art. They always tell you what a picture is about. Of course, many pictures are not about anything. They are just pretty patterns. We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. I think that young children often appreciate modern pictures better than anyone else. They notice more. My sister is only seven, but she always tells me whether my pictures are good or not. She came into my room yesterday.
What are you doing? she asked.
Im hanging this picture on the wall, I answered. Its a new one. Do you like it?
She looked at it critically for a moment. Its all right, she said, but isnt it upside down? I looked at it again. She was right! It was!

27 A wet night雨夜
Late in the afternoon, the boys put up their tent in the middle of a field. As soon as this was done, they cooked a meal over an open fire. They were all hungry and the food smelled good. After a wonderful meal, they told stories and sang songs by the campfire. But some time later it began to rain. The boys felt tired so they put out the fire and crept into their tent. Their sleeping bags were warm and comfortable, so they all slept soundly. In the middle of the night, two boys woke up and began shouting. The tent was full of water! They all leapt out of their sleeping bags and hurried outside. It was raining heavily and they found that a stream had formed in the field. The stream wound its way across the field and then flowed right under their tent!

Jasper White is one of those rare people who believes in ancient myths. he has just bought a new house in the city, but ever since he moved in, he has had trouble with cars and their owners. When he returns home at night, he always finds that someone has parked a car outside his gate. Because of this, he has not been able to get his own car into his garage even once. Jasper has put up No Parking signs outside his gate, but these have not had any effect. Now he has put an ugly stone head over the gate. It is one of the ugliest faces I have ever seen. I asked him what it was and he told me that it was Medusa, the Gorgon. jasper hopes that she will turn cars and their owners to stone. But none of them has been turned to stone yet!

Captain Ben Fawcett has bought an unusual taxi and has begun a new service. The taxi is a small Swiss aeroplane called a Pilatus Porter. This wonderful plane can carry seven passengers. The most surprising thing about it, however, is that it can land anywhere: on snow, water, or even on a ploughed field. Captain Fawcetts first passenger was a doctor who flew from Birmingham to a lonely village in the Welsh mountains. Since then, Captain Fawcett has flown passengers to many unusual places. Once he landed on the roof of a block of flats and on another occasion, he landed in a deserted car park. Captain Fawcett has just refused a strange request from a businessman. The man wanted to fly to Rockall, a lonely island in the Atlantic Ocean, but Captain Fawcett did not take him because the trip was too dangerous.

30 Football or polo?足球還是水球?
The Wayle is a small river that cuts across the park near my home. I like sitting by the Wayle on fine afternoons. It was warm last Sunday, so I went and sat on the river bank as usual. Some children were playing games on the bank and there were some people rowing on the river. Suddenly, one of the children kicked a ball very hard and it went towards a passing boat. Some people on the bank called out to the man in the boat, but he did not hear them. The ball struck him so hard that he nearly fell into the water. I turned to look at the children, but there werent any in sight: they had all run away! The man laughed when he realized what had happened. He called out to the children and threw the ball back to the bank.

新概念英語的學習方法總結
第一部分 聽力
大家完全可以把《新概念英語》當成是一套很好的聽力教材，它的配套磁帶有英音和美音兩種。大家可以根據(jù)自己的發(fā)音習慣或者考試等實際需要去選擇購買。根據(jù)經(jīng)驗總結，大家可以通過以下步驟來練習英語聽力——
一、不要看書，將整篇課文聽寫下來。如果有一些單詞聽不出，千萬不要急于翻書，首先嘗試猜測該詞應該是什么。我們在做聽力考試的時候也會遇到同樣的困難，應當去適應這種環(huán)境。隨著聽寫的增多，聽力會逐漸增強。在聽的過程中，也可加深對英語發(fā)音的認識。而且實踐證明，如果能達到一聽就懂的程度，你的腦子里英語翻譯成漢語的現(xiàn)象就會消失，閱讀理解的能力一定會大大提高。
二、把聽寫下來的文章與原文比對，查找錯誤，這樣才能在今后避免重復的錯誤。
三、跟著磁帶反復跟讀課文。注意各單詞的讀音以及語調等問題，語音語調盡量模仿磁帶，力求接近磁帶上的。
第二部分 詞匯
新概念教材課文里所學習的單詞與其他的教材不同，都是最基本、最常用的詞匯，與大家的日常生活緊密相連，所以一定要掌握。這里推薦一個好東西，邁西新概念背單詞軟件，很適合短時間內(nèi)積累大量基礎詞匯。值得提出的是：背單詞不要孤立地背，一定要融合到句子中去。對于意思不太明白的，最好用英英詞典或者雙解詞典查閱并掌握其含義。在詞典中把這個單詞每個不同的例句都要找找出一兩句實用的作為代表練出來，這樣你才會知道一個單詞的不同用法。除了聽寫、默寫以外，還要增加閱讀量，看一些和自己水平相當?shù)挠⒄Z其他書籍從而擴充詞匯量，就我個人認為，詞匯量這個概念應該是英語水平提高后才涉及的問題，不應該是初學者上來就想的事情，初學者應該先掌握基本句式，會說會寫了，才能去想這個東西英文怎么說，那個東西英文怎么稱呼，這個時候才是增加詞匯量的時候。閱讀不需要去背誦，也不需要去聽錄音，但必須勤查詞典。這個方法只是為了增加詞匯量，盡量短時間內(nèi)減少生詞。
第三部分 語法和閱讀
建議大家進行課后的習題練習和同步測試，鞏固學習內(nèi)容，檢驗學習效果。尤其是，新概念每課都有一個自己的核心語法內(nèi)容，這就要求學生要將每課的這一個語法掌握。如果個別同學感覺自己的語法和閱讀水平較差的，最好選擇一些與自己水平相當?shù)恼Z法教材和英語分級閱讀讀物來進行課外學習，以提高英語實力。
第四部分 寫作
很多人不知道如何借學習新概念來提高自己的寫作能力，其實這也是有法可循的。你可以在接觸一篇新的課文前，先不要看它的英文，而是根據(jù)它的中文翻譯自己寫再翻譯成英語，然后再和原文對照，這樣一經(jīng)對比，就可以找到自己寫作的弱點和問題，及時修正，日久積累，從而獲得提高。特別是第三冊和第四冊里面的一些美文，就為大家提供了相當好的寫作方法和經(jīng)典范文。
第五部分 背誦
在學習過程中，背誦一些經(jīng)典課文將對英語的記憶、理解非常有益。尤其對于英語初學者而言，通過背誦課文可以加深對英語的記憶，在頭腦中形成固定的記憶區(qū)域，這是一個由量變到質變的過程。很多經(jīng)典的句型、語法、詞匯，通過背誦課文，都可以十分有效地長駐背誦者心中，這樣一來，同學們的閱讀、語法和寫作，能夠同時得到提高。
